Marshmallow
Althaea officinalis
Marshmallow is native to salt marshes along the coast in Europe, but it is widely cultivated and naturalized. We love growing these tall beauties with their soft, velvety leaves and lovely flowers. We find that they thrive in mostly to partly sunny locations with plenty of moisture.

Besides being a beautiful plant, Marshmallow also gifts us with its mucilaginous medicine. This mucilage is soothing, softening, and inflammation modulating. Marshmallow also contains tannins which provide a bit of astringency, and salts that provide diuretic and emollient qualities.

We love using Marshmallow in the winter when the dry heat of the wood stove and dry cold weather is taking a toll on our mucosa. We also use it for balancing remedies that might be too drying for certain constitutions.

We grow Marshmallow every year and make tincture from the fresh root and tea from the leaves.
